My Review:
Kong: Skull Island
I seen "Kong: Skull Island" a long time ago; but after watching "Godzilla Vs Kong", I decided to watch it again in order to write a review for it.
First off let me make it very clear, "Kong: Skull Island" is theatrically sound. It has a great script, a great story, great acting, good action and great CGI.
So, it is a good movie.
Everything is so practical about "Kong: Skull Island", I can't find anything wrong with it.
The only negative thing I can even attempt to say about this movie is the magic it has lost after its debut impact.
See, I'm reviewing "Kong: Skull Island" years after its release and after reviewing its sequel. Thus, my opinion has a certain amount of bias that can only be accompanied by viewing it in hindsight.
The CGI was good in "Kong: Skull Island"; and I would say it was excellent for the era that it debut in. But watching his movie after watching its later sequel, I found it very difficult to review this movie without any bias due to hindsight.
This is only my second movie review and I'm still trying to get the hang of this; even though I realize a movie should be reviewed on its own merit.
I believe "Kong: Skull Island" is a better movie than "Godzilla Vs Kong"; because it is so practical. It has a better story, better content and better acting than "Godzilla Vs Kong".
However, I would rather watch "Godzilla Vs Kong" - because the action is better, the fight scenes are better and the CGI looks better.
Moreover, after reviewing this movie, I wanted to re-rate "Godzilla Vs Kong" with 4 stars instead of 3.
But I already rated "Godzilla Vs Kong" with 3 stars for good reason, and this movie, "Kong: Skull Island", doesn't deserve anything less than 3; even though I now believe "Godzilla Vs Kong" deserves a slightly better rating and not the same.
"Kong: Skull Island" did the best it could do with what it had to work with. It's shortcoming is only made apparent, years after its successor had enough time to evolved.
In fact, "Godzilla Vs Kong" action evolved; so much so, that it didn't even tried to put effort into its story; and it still was good enough.
Nevertheless, in the end, I think 3 stars for both is the right decision; because both movies give and take polar opposites; which in a sense put them on an even scale.
Plus, I feel a review should be rated on its own merit as much as possible.
